South Queensferry
South Queensferry: The Seaside Gateway to Scotland’s Heart
Perched on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, just a few miles from Edinburgh, the historic town of South Queensferry is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. With its colourful harbourside houses, breathtaking views of the iconic Forth Bridges, and centuries of royal and maritime history, South Queensferry offers that rare combination of charm, culture, and coastal beauty—without the tourist crowds of the bigger cities.
At Kilt CouTOURé, we love weaving South Queensferry into our Tours of Scotland itineraries, whether as a relaxing coastal stop, a photography highlight, or even the starting or ending point of your time in the Lowlands. And like every stop on your bespoke tour, your visit to South Queensferry is fully taken care of—from luxury transport and flexible pacing to dining reservations and hidden-gem recommendations.
A Town Steeped in Royal and Religious History
South Queensferry takes its name from Queen Margaret of Scotland (later Saint Margaret), who established a ferry service here in the 11th century to carry pilgrims across the Forth on their way to St Andrews. Her ferry service ran for over 800 years, until the Forth Road Bridge opened in the 1960s.
Wandering the cobbled streets of the old town today, it’s not hard to imagine those medieval travellers making their way along the shore. The town still holds an old-world atmosphere, especially around The Loan, where narrow alleyways curve past colourful houses, traditional pubs, and independent shops.
You’ll also spot the striking Priory Church, built on the site of a 13th-century Carmelite monastery. It’s one of the very few Carmelite churches still in use in the UK and adds a quiet, spiritual layer to the town’s history.
The Iconic Forth Bridges
South Queensferry is probably most famous for its views of the Forth Bridges—three engineering marvels spanning three different centuries. The red steel lattice of the Forth Bridge, a 19th-century railway masterpiece, remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next to it, the elegant curves of the Forth Road Bridge and the sleek modern design of the Queensferry Crossing (opened in 2017) form a dramatic trio that symbolises Scotland’s past, present, and future.
From the harbour, the view of these bridges—especially at sunset—is nothing short of iconic. And if you’re a fan of engineering, photography, or simply beautiful landscapes, this is a must-see.
For guests with a bit more time, Kilt CouTOURé can arrange a guided boat cruise beneath the bridges, offering unbeatable angles for photos and a fresh perspective on the Firth of Forth’s natural and industrial significance.
Boutique Shopping, Cozy Cafés, and Harbourside Dining
South Queensferry might be small, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to atmosphere and hospitality. There’s no shortage of lovely spots to enjoy a proper cup of tea, indulge in handmade chocolates, or sit by the window with a dram of whisky and watch the tide roll in.
We particularly love booking our guests a table at one of the local bistros with views over the water—fresh seafood, Highland beef, and local produce are always on the menu. Prefer a quiet picnic with a view? We’ll pack a gourmet hamper, complete with a tartan blanket and some Isle of Mull cheddar, and whisk you away to one of the quieter coves nearby.
Our team knows all the best spots to suit your pace and preferences—whether you’re after something celebratory and fine-dining, or something low-key and local.
Luxury, Comfort, and Complete Peace of Mind
Visiting South Queensferry with Kilt CouTOURé means everything is tailored and seamless. We handle all the logistics—from Edinburgh pickups in our luxury vehicles to restaurant bookings, ferry timetables (if you fancy hopping across to Inchcolm Island), and expert local insights that turn a simple stop into something truly memorable.
Travelling with family or a partner? We’ll curate the visit to match your group—think storytelling strolls for history buffs, whisky tastings for the curious, or leisurely shopping time for those who appreciate fine Scottish goods. Want to pair South Queensferry with nearby gems like Blackness Castle or Hopetoun House? Consider it done.
